Whether you’re an experienced fake tanner or have just started trawling through the World Wide Web to learn the tricks of the trade you may have noticed something… Every fake tan tips list reads pretty much the same: 1. Shave the day before, 2. Make sure you exfoliate, 3. Be careful when you apply to your elbows and knees and 4. Moisturise religiously in the days following…
Now don’t get us wrong, these types of lists are great and we’ve definitely published our fair share of them. They provide an amazing foundation from which to build a fake tanning routine, but they rarely deliver anything new or surprising. So what we at After Tan Co have done is compile a fake tanning tips list unlike any other, with unique and untraditional tips that will have even the most experienced of tanners updating their routines.
Fake Tan Tip #1: The Pore-Shrink
If your routine includes applying fake tan to your face we recommend rubbing an ice cube along your nose, chin and any area on your face prone to black heads before applying. Doing so will help shrink your pores before you apply your tan, which in turn will prevent your tan from sinking into your pores and giving the appearance of blackheads.
Fake Tan Tip #2: Combat Armpit Betrayal
We all know the pits are the first area to betray you when it comes to your fake tan reaching the end of its life. All experienced tanners are familiar with that peculiar walk that occurs after fake tan application where you hold your arms just a bit away from your body to avoid sweaty pits. If you are applying your fake tan in the morning and then running some errands during the day you are particularly susceptible to damaging you underarm tan in those important development hours. If this is you then we recommend applying some baby powder under your arms about 10 minutes after you apply you tan and it’s no longer wet to the touch. The baby powder is able to absorb some of the moisture of the tan and helps to combat any unintentional rubbing that causes your tan to rub off before it’s had a chance to develop. By applying the powder directly to the armpit area you ensure that you get your tan off to a good start. If you’re a night tanner you can use this tip too, but we recommend using it in conjunction with the After Tan Co Bamboo Pillow and Sheet Protector to stop your tan from transferring onto your precious bedding.
Fake Tan Tip #3: Moisturiser; Friend or Foe?
There is a misconception that applying a combination of moisturiser and fake tan to your skin will help you achieve an even and subtle glow but be careful! Applying any creams or oils prior to fake tanning can cause an uneven, patchy application. If you are using moisturiser make sure you apply it sparingly and only on dry skin areas such as your elbows and ankles, but don’t go overboard.
Fake Tan Tip #4: The Unintentional Brow Tint
Another one for the face fake tanners, specifically those blonde beauties out there. The last thing you want is for your fake tan to work its way into your brow line or hair line and give it an orange tinge that doesn’t match the rest of your luscious locks. By applying a small amount of moisturiser to your brows and hairline prior to applying your fake tan to you face your hair will be saved from an unintentional tinting.
Fake Tan Tip #5: Nails on Fleek
We hear it all the time to moisturise the backs of the hands to avoid orange knuckles but what few people include in fake tanning hand maintenance are the fingernails. Regular tanners may have experienced that unsightly orange/brown tinge that your nails can take on when applying fake tan, the best way to combat this is by wiping your finger and toe nails with a cleansing wipe to finish off your routine. This will ensure your nails stay gorgeous and free from that unhealthy orange tint.
Now that you’re armed with these fresh, new tan tips and tricks get out there and get your tan on! Happy tanning and we wish you streak-free applications.
