Exfoliate your way to gorgeous fake tan ready skin with After Tan Co Awesome Exfoliating Mitts

We tend to stay indoors more during the cooler months, cosying up with the heater vowing that next year we will be in a tropical paradise. In order to kill time and feel generally better about ourselves,  fake(tan)ing-it-till-we-make it, is the name of the game. What we also know is that fake tan fades, and layering upon layering or just watching that tan die gradually often ends in a very uneven skin.

As the very, very last chapter of the Tan Plan, exfoliation is your friend.

The skin is our largest organ and between working or studying in an air-conditioned environment, our skin often becomes dry so when we apply fake tan it can result in uneven patches or a tan that only lasts a few days.

Regular exfoliation (once or twice a week) has a multitude of benefits so if it’s not already part of your beauty regime, make sure you add it stat!

Here’s why

Skin can appear dull and lacklustre in winter and although fake tanning is one way to quickly update your look, perfect the base (your body!) first by exfoliating.

Worst areas for build up (of skin and tan) is the neck, elbows, knees and edge of the armpits. Very glamorous. So while exfoliating helps you to uncover your natural radiance…fake tan helps you to achieve a healthy glow. It’s a win-win!

Improves skin texture

We lose approximately 30,000 dead skin cells every minute off the surface of our skin. Exfoliating encourages the skin renewal process to reveal newer healthier skin cells to help you achieve glowing skin.

As we age, cell regeneration slows. The build-up of dead skin cells can result in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, so exfoliating assists to reduce the signs of aging.

If you’ve ever exfoliated you’ll know how it feels when you run your hand over a newly exfoliated area…super soft and silky. While we tend to be more covered up in winter, if you’re planning to spend the night dancing up a storm with your squad, even something as small as soft skin can give you a little confidence boost.

How to master exfoliation (properly)

To realise the full benefits start at your feet and work your way towards your heart, exfoliating in circular motions. Fellow fake tanners will need to pay particular attention to potential problem areas such as elbows and knees. The pressure should be gentle but firm for even better results you may wish to use an exfoliating scrub. Keep an eye out for our Aussie Sand Tan Remover Scrub – coming soon!

Exfoliation = More effective moisturisation

Whether you use Cetaphil or La Prairie, you still want to get the best out of your skin care. The epidermis (the outer layer of the skin) acts like a barrier so by scrubbing off the dead skin cells/patches at the top, it is easier for moisturisers to absorb into the skin. Not only will your skin feel more supple and hydrated but you’ll also find that fake tan will go on more smoothly and evenly.

If we haven’t convinced you to exfoliate now, we don’t know if we ever will!

      Hi Frances, once you’ve found a shade of tan that you love, we recommend topping up your tan using wipes just once-twice a week. However, since the skin does regenerate quite quickly we do recommend exfoliating gently every one-two days and reapplying the tan completely ever two weeks.
